For the golfing fraternity the Costa de Almeria provides the ideal environment for a few rounds of golf in the sun, where shorts and a polo top are generally the order of the day as the region benefits from in excess of 320 days of sunshine a year. After all the region is classified with semi-desert status.

Certainly in the months of November through to April where in the UK, Northern Europe & Scandinavia the weather generally means for those brave enough to venture out onto the golf course, often playing off mats and temporary greens with thermals and at least two outer layers of clothing to fend off the cold.
Well do I remember those days, returning to the club house and changing rooms, feeling cold damp and miserable? At least there was another good excuse for a poor score.

Here in Roquetas de Mar those conditions are more of an exception rather than the norm, although to be frank the weather pattern since September 2008 for the Autumn & Winter to date, (Jan 09) has slightly changed, with more rain than normal for the time of year and the Poniente winds which come off the mountains from the North West, or the Levante coming in off the Mediterranean from the South East, blowing a little stronger and for longer. It does make for an interesting round of golf and means that the local courses never play the same week to week.
When in Roquetas de Mar on the Playa Serena Golf course it is not unusual to look Northwards to the Sierra Gador and see the clouds hang over the mountain range whilst down below on the coastal plain the sun is shining and the sky is clear and blue.
In fact I think it is those mountain ranges of the Sierra Gador, Alpujarras and beyond the Sierra Nevada which create here on the coastal plain a micro climate.

Roquetas de Mar is a great place to base yourself for a golfing holiday, Playa Serena the local course is right on the edge of the town, which means you have 8 hotels within 10-15 minutes walking distance of the club and for those who are really determined to save there energy for walking a round there is actually an apartment complex right in the middle of the back nine holes of the course, where from the back gate it is a leisurely 4 minute walk.

As well as the close proximity of the golf club it affords you very easy access to all of the Restaurants, Bars & Shops along Avenida Playa Serena, so no taxi journeys, long walks or a member of the party acting as a delegated driver for the night, you are right in the middle of all that you require to enjoy your stay.

Within a maximum of a 40 minute drive are three other good golf Courses, to the South West, about a 25 minute drive is Almerimar, to the North East is La Envia approximately 30 minutes drive, last, but not least Alboran, Designed and built for the 2005 Mediterranean games about a 40 minute drive.

Further details of these Golf courses and others are shown in the navigation on the left side.
